When it comes to tortoise care, one of the most important choices you will make is the type of tortoise house you get. It is also usually the most expensive pet tortoise accessory, so it’s important you choose the right one. In today’s article, I will review one of my favorite tortoise houses: The Anisum Wooden Tortoise House.
Anisum wooden tortoise house
The anisum wooden tortoise house comes equipped with the perfect space for your tortoise. It is very affordable, and you can purchase it on amazon for around $100.
Size
It’s sleek and durable design allows it to blend in with just about any room in your house. You can get it in a dark gray, or a light brown shade.
This wooden tortoise house is 39 inches long and 24 inches wide. It has a height of 1 foot, and weighs about 20 lbs. You can set it on just about any table that has four legs. It is great for any tortoise that is 8 inches or smaller.
The structure is made from a high quality fir wood that will certainly last for years. There is also an acrylic viewing area that you can see pictured below.
2 Room Design
What I like most about this tortoise house is the 2 room design. There is a large room on the left that can be used for basking and toys, and a smaller dark room on the right that your tortoise can sleep in. The dark room has a wooden cover you can place above it to help prevent light from getting in.
For the larger room (on the left), I suggest you include a basking spot, water bowl, and some plants. I also put a small wooden log house that my tortoise can crawl under. For the dark room (on the right), I suggest you put some vines or leaves that your turtle can rest on top of.
Strong Metal Wire
The metal mesh wire that covers the larger room is strong enough to hold multiple lamps. This is great because it allows you to put the basking light very close to the ground floor.
You can also run water tubes through it so you can easily fill up your turtles water bowl.
Easy to clean
This wooden tortoise house is very easy to clean. You can lift up the coverings on both rooms and easy clean out any waste. You can also remove the side and bottom panel to remove unwanted debris. The coverings on both rooms have a latch that allows you to lock the coverings in place.
Indoor/Outdoor use
While most people decide to put this house indoors, you can definitely keep it outside. Keeping your tortoise outside will give your tortoise access to natural UVA and UVB light from the sun. It is waterproof so you don’t have to worry about the wood deteriorating. However, I definitely suggest bringing the house inside during heavy rain.
If you do keep your tortoise outside, you should make sure there are no animals nearby that will try to eat your tortoise. The best way to prevent this is to put the tortoise house inside a fence or some other type of enclosure.
Attaching two houses together
If you have multiple tortoises, you can easily attach to of the tortoise houses together. All you have to do is remove the side panel from each house.
Downside
The only downside of this tortoise house is that it does not come pre-assembled. If you follow the directions correctly, you should be able to assemble the house in less than an hour. However, it can be frustrating if you are not used to assembling things.
Conclusion
All in all, the Anisum wooden tortoise house is a great, cheap option for a tortoise house. Aside from tortoises, you can also use the house for a box turtle enclosure. However, you should make sure that you put a small body of water that your box turtle can soak in, such as the platform pictured below.
